Create your Own Linux

If I were to want to make my own distro of a certain Linux such as Ubuntu, how would I get round doing it and making an ISO for it?

Also, what is arch linux exactly? Do you install everything yourself? Is it compatible with a P4-HT x86...

If not...what would be good to run on a x86_32 Pentium 4 with 1.5gb RAM and a NVIDIA GFORCE 9300GT... that has GRUB which can install along side Windows XP Media Center Edition, and has the cool layouts like people post with the system info up the side... customisable...easy...I dc if it is command line, as I have to deal with this on debian on my raspberry pi...

Look forwards to hearing from anyone with ideas.

Well I have never played with it but there is Linux from Scratch. From what I have read about it is that it is quiet a challenge if you have no idea what you are doing. If you want something more basic there is suse studio where you can customize how it looks and work and you can burn it to disc but at the end of the day you are using opensuse.

http://susestudio.com/

As for Arch, you are running Arch Linux but you basically build the OS considering the fact you decide which packages you are going to run, but you must be careful for the fact that you could make Arch very stable or you could go very bleeding edge but then there comes issues with the bleeding edge. Arch does offer a very nice step by step guide on there wiki page.

If you want to go advance and build something super custom then try gentoo, have never touched and have heard it is very hard and time consuming.

You really don't need something special for that hardware. Just install any basic distro and then install a lightweight DE like enlightenment or LXDE.

Arch/Gentoo are both rather straightforward to setup, but I both find them both pointless. I don't want to spend 3 hours compiling my office software.

LFS is something very different completely; I wouldn't suggest that to anyone unless they have a very, very in depth knowledge of Linux.

If your really want to build something up, do a Debian net-install and then install your DE of choice. Otherwise just pick any old distro and install LXDE.

Arch wont run, arch only supports i686, the P4HT is i386. If I want a simple linux where I can add the packages, a bit like debian, and customise the looks of it, so you have the system performance info up the side, what would you reccomend? Is your Linux stable....if not, debian looks like the way to go..

EDIT: ALSO. I NEED IT TO BE MULTIBOOTABLE, Does Debian Support the feature where you can resize the partitions, without having to set all the partitions up? Like Ubuntu and Fedora do? Otherwise Fed might be my best bet...or ArtistX.

Is my Linux Distro stable? Yes. I also force you to auto partition, which some people don't like. It's based on Debian Lenny.
I'd still suggest doing a Debian net-install and installing LXDE as a DE. I say this because I find it a lot better to build up, then tear down. As far as the debian installer, it can auto make partitions for you if needed, but it's really easy process to make them yourself.

As far as "multibootable" almost every single Linux OS uses grub which allows you to pick the OS on startup.

As long as it partitions automatically without me having to chose swap, /, /boot/ / home partitions, I dont mind. What is the difference between GNOME, KDE-Spin, LXDE (Light Desktop), and XFCE...Which would be better (Looking at Fedora Environments, which I like alot but cant seem to choose...)
