anyone have any funny or usefull things i can do with an old computer i found. it turns on but it doesnt have any ram or harddrive. buut if you can come up with something worth doing i will put ram and a drive in. it has a disk dive, but no floppy.

i dont know much about this mysterious computer but i'll share the little i know.

pentium 2, (maybe P3 but i doubt it, the chipset says '97 on it so i assume it a P2)
mobo has VX Pro chipset
a 4mb video card...the name has slipped my mind.

First thing I can think of is to get it back up and running and either keep it as a backup machine or donate it to someone less fortunate who would really like a PC.
Second thing is if you have no experience with Linux, put it on there and start the learning! :)

Put Damn Small Linux on it just for fun. If you have 128 MB RAM you can install Puppy Linux. That's what I did with a machine I found.

keep in the closet and like Brianmay27 said, look back and laugh..lol
am just kidding, it can be useful to try some linux distro on instead of messing on your main PC or just give it away

Some processors might make a neat belt buckle if your into that kind of thing. Ram can be sharped and used as a shank. Hard drives can make good paper weights, even in high indoor wind situations, Drives are fun to close on things (I.e. putting a hotdog in there when you push close...see what happens), psu can be an anchor for a rowboat, or put on a chain for a flail, mobo=cool gadget to hang from the ceiling of your room, so if you have a girl in there she has a reason not to make out with you...Theres tons of stuff to do with old computers!

1) Set up a dedicated media/file/printing server (that's what I did with my old computer)
2) Buy a capture card and use it as a media PC
3) Use it for folding :)
4) Gut it out and make the CPU into a keychain
5) Make it a dedicated firewall

ahaha i like the way you think...this is the stuff i was aiming for lol

See how fast it can be thrown from a speeding car :D

Then Test

Repeat.

Hehe. I got 2 throws out my old case at 119km/h then it died at 130km/h

AHA, thats great. but do you think its possible to run a dedicated CSS server off of? say if i get 256mb ram and a small HD. then i could put linux on it and run a small server. but then again id need a faster internet connection as i only have 1000 down and 128 up...but just a thought.

I'd say try setting up a CS 1.6 server. A CSS server may be stretching the computer to its limits. As for internet, 1000 down/128 up = 1mbps down/128kbps up?

Story: So I was walking my dog and I found a whole bunch of computers about 8 of them so I brought them back to my house and did the following.
(my theroy is they belonged to the army)

PC 1 and 2 <Gateway
Specs:

Pentium 2
512mb Ram
32mb Nvidia Riva TNT pro
X2 20GB = 40GB HDD
Windows NT

I put Xp on them and made them a Firewall for my new gaming pc.

PC 3 Some brand E machines maybe
Specs:

Pentium 3
512mb Ram
64mb Geforce 4MX
80GB HDD
Windows XP

I turned it into a media manager and scanner <I.E Means every file I download tests and scans for virus before I add it to my pc via Two way firewire

PC 4 - 8 < Some Compaq pc

Pentium 3
1GB
256mb FX 5200
120GB HDD

Turned them into a intenet server and it brings my broad band to life
