Crisis, and not the Game!!!

well, my birthday is may 1st and i have put 0 thought towards what i want, which is pretty uncharacteristic. basically i am not sure what i want. here is my rig:
Antec 902 case with window mod
GA-MA780g-UD3H
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ Brisbane OC'd to 3.31 GHz
Zalman 9700
Kingwin 850 W PSU
G. Skill 4 GB DDR2 1066 RAM running at about 950 due to CPU
Extra Antec 120 mm 3-Speed fan inside case
Western Digital 200 GB and 1 TB Hitachi 7200 RPM SATA HDDs

i am looking to (in the near future) upgrade to a new motherboard with ddr3 compatibility. i want an am3 socket cpu. and finally i want another hd 5770 gpu for a crossfire setup. my parents aren't rich by any means so i'll get away with something about $125-$150 at absolute max, but i have another $75 i have been wanting to unload on something cool which i could put towards my present.

since i would have to upgrade my cpu and ram if i were to get a new mobo, that would not work (unless i got free ram from somewhere). so basically it is between a gpu and cpu. which would benefit me most? i mostly game. keep in mind my mobo only has a 4x pci-e on the second slot which means i would lose a bit of my possible performance :rolleyes:

please help :eek:

yeah i already have a couple of motherboards that i have been window shopping for :P but like i said with my "budget" i would never be able to do it (unless one of you wanted to surprise me with a b-day set of ddr3 ram :rolleyes:). anyone else care to say something?
 
A friend of mine used my 4850 to run in crossfire with his and we saw almost no performance upgrade since his board had the pci express running in dual 8. I wouldn't buy a motherboard for crossfire that does not run in dual 16.

So for the original question, go for the cpu upgrade.

Get this CPU http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103846&Tpk=Phenom II x2 555 or if you wont a quad but that isn't quite as good for gaming then go with this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...704&cm_re=Athlon_II_x4-_-19-103-704-_-Product.

Then go ahead and get yourself an AM3 motherboard something like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128427

You can go ahead and and use the CPU in your current motherboard(note: your current mobo will support all new AM3 CPUs) then all you have left to get is some RAM( you could sell your old RAM, Mobo, and CPU to pay for the new RAM). This is just what I would do though. If you wont then you can go ahead and spend most of you money on the CPU. Honestly though I would just tell them to give me the money and start saving until you have enough for a mobo, CPU, and RAM all at once.

how much do you think i'd get for the cpu, ram, and mobo combo? had them all for about 9 months or so, if that.
 
I'd pay the extra $9 for the BE version. They're specifically made for overclocking, which, based on your current rig, would be a good thing.

Also, in case you didn't know, AM2 and AM3 use the same HSF mounting system, so you'll be able to move your Zalman to the new mobo. :good:

yep i knew that. i love my zalman and am glad i get to keep it :P

Sure that Mobo is still good and it supports all AM3 CPUs which is a good selling point. Is that RAM 4gbs? if so then you could probably get $100 from just the mobo and RAM with the CPU thrown in maybe $130+.
