Critique My Build! Celebrate Q6600 Price Cut

Hey guys,

So this is what I'm thinking for my new build. Its my first time building from scratch, so I'd appreciate it if you could make any suggestions to plug up any holes/problems you might forsee. I'll be using it for a lot of media type work (Flash, Photoshop, Itunes, etc) and work related stuff (Excel modelling). I might do alittle gaming on the side if I have time...

CPU: Intel Q6600 Quad Core ($266)

Memory: 2GB DDR2 RAM 24pin, 2 Sticks for 2 Dimms on mobo

GPU: Geforce XFX 5200 AGP 256mb vid card (left over from friends comp, may upgrade later)

Motherboard: Asus...? Any good suggestions here? Cost effective

HDD: Western Digital Caviar SE16 500GB 3.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM

Monitors: Dell 2407WFP Ultrasharp 24" monitor, Acer 20" LCD (for dual display)

PSU: ~650W PSU, still have to research what matches my final build

ROMs: DVDRW+/- and DVD Rom for easy copying and playing.

Do you guys see any problem with the build? I know heat management is a problem with quadcore cpus, hopefully my case can handle it. I believe it is rated high for sound-proofing, since I hope to have as quiet a system as possible without water-cooling.
 
you'll need a super cooler to keep that Quad nice and cool. One such as the Thermalright ultra 120 or tuniq tower would be good.

Most Quad core ready motherboards will not have an AGP slot, seeing as it is much outdated by PCIe. So an upgrade there is necessary. an 8800 would be great for everything you can throw at it right now, but a 7900 would do just as fine for less if you dont plan on gaming much.

Thanks for the cooling tip. I currently work on an Inspiron 5100, which finds a way to overheat unless I put it on top of a block of ice. With this quad core q6600, I am going to try and overclock it up to 3ghz.

I know this will cause more heat output, but do you think it will be manageable given my midtower setup? I am terrified I will have overheating problems with this new comp. If it is too hot I might just use the E6850 instead.

What are your thoughts? Thanks again

Worst case if it did overheat you would need to buy a heatsink/fan for it which is cheap compare to what you would need to buy if it was a laptop, probably is going to idle around 40ish if you overclock it

For this you would need a mother board that supports FSB 1333 ( to add the E6850)
 
Thanks for the tips. I think I will go with the Thermalright ultra 120, especially since I noticed other people talking about using it in other threads.

If I do use it, is there any way that I can be sure it will fit in the case I have chosen? It seems really large in the pics.

Also, since it is a heat sink, do i need to have a fan blowing on it or do you guys think the case's circulation will be sufficient? Similar question for the video card as well (where I decided to drop the 5200 and get a 7900 as suggested. Do I need a fan blowing on the vid card as well?

I'm putting my order in over the next couple days, thanks again...
 
it'll fit, for sure in that case. the video card practically doesn't even need a fan for its size,so no you dont need one on that. but the cpu heatsink? are you saying it doesnt have a fan on it? mostly every single one does
 
Ooo nice case, I don't think the pictures do it enough justice :). Anyway, Go with an 8800 GTS, for your GPU, the FX 5200 is practically ancient in todays modern world of GPUs. Motherboard wise, since your not too heavy into gameing, maybe a 650i chipset would do,

Other than that I think you are good to go. I must say, that case is very pretty lol, but it will be a dust magnet...use that cleaning cloth to your advantage and stock up on canned air.
 
I have a friend with that mobo and a Q6600, he like it.. but it will not work for me for one main reson, It can only support 800mhz ram.. I am going for THIS, it also has alot more stuff (2 LAN ports, 10USB, Firewire) and it has 3 PCI-E ports. its the most popular item on TigerDirect.

I check newegg and tiger every 10 mins waiting for the price drop.. Im twitching
