cropping an image in either fireworks or photoshop

I am crap at Photoshop but I picked up afew things from my friend. You could try using the lasso tool but this may take many atempts to get it right. Or alterniatively you could use the eraser andslowly make your way round the edge. And then do something with layers and transparency lol, thats where someone else can help.

The only way I can think of right off(which there might be an easier way...) Use the shape tool and fill in what you want to crop on a new layer. You might need to rasterize the shape to go farther, I can't remember right off... Either way, either select the shape, or the outside and invert the selection. Then just crop your selection and remove the layer you created...
Im not at home right now, so im not sure if this works i havnt tried it.
First crop the shape useing the crop tool, after that go to the rectangular lasso tool?? then put a feather of 20 or something in the toolbar then right click and select all, it should come up with the rectangle with curved edges, then right click and go cut via layer, then go to layers, and delete the old layer, you should be left with it having curved edges. then you could add a 1 pixel border on it after youre done.
