Cross-over or straight through?

Hi.
Please correct me if I'm wrong:
Cross-over cable is needed when 2 PC are connected to eachother.
But which one I need if 2 PC's are connected to a hub with internet connection?
And does anyone have experience with ntl: cable broadband? I was experiencing problems to connect to a ntl: internet network and then I found some information that if AOL is installed, you can't get online with ntl:

With a router you can use a cross-over or straight through.

But generally a straight through is what you want to use for a PC-Hub connection.

But if I'm using cross-over cable with hub, can the result be "Limited or No Connectivity"?
