If you can use a crossover cable to connect 2 pcs without the need for a router and share internet and files? Can the same be done with 2 pcs with wireless capabilities?

Lone :-)

Yup, but its not called a crossover. You can setup an ad-hoc network with two or more devices only using wireless cards.

Hi Omega and thanx for the reply!

Could I trouble you to explain how I would go about setting up this..ad-hoc network?

My PC runs XP Pro SP2 with a wireless g card and my Lappy runs XP Home SP2 also with wireless g card.

Wow just looked at how many posts you've done!!!! :-| Kinda of... caught my eye!

Lone :-)

lol, sure.

Im not sure if your using the Windows wireless network center, or the one that came with your wireless card. I'll assume your using the Windows one, but if your not, you can go into your control panel and change it for Windows to manage it.

Anyways, go into the Wireless network manager under the control panel, click on "change advanced settings" on the left side. Then click on the center tab "Wireless Networks", click "add", then create an SSID, set your encryption if you want, then on the bottom select "this is an ad hoc network".

Hello,
In my control panel I have 'wireless network setup wizard' but not 'Wireless network manager', I can right click on the wireless Network Connection in network connections>properties

And access 'Wireless Networks' there?

Thank you for your help, Omega

OK Ive done that on both laptop and PC and they are both connected!

BUT, how do I (or can I) access the internet on my laptop, my modem is connected to my PC.

Can I share the PCs internet and say, files etc?

Lone :-)

Do you mean you have the modem connected to one of the PC's via ethernet or USB? You should be able to right click on the modem connection in the network connections folder, and see if you can set up internet sharing by right clicking on the connection, or try to create a new wireless network using the wizard.

Im not really sure on sharing an internet connection this way, since i've never done it.

in "network connections" you should see two connections. one for your internet, and one for your ad-hoc network. you need to bridge these two connections together by right clicking the icons.

Hi again,

Yeah, the internet modem is connected to the PC and Im wanting to share the internet on my laptop.

I was using a router re post: Can anyone help re: Routers? But now for some reason I cant get the router too play ball, the ADSL lights keep flashing and Im told that it cant connect the the ADSL line, for some reason.

I tried the networking wizard, but I cant share the internet or files. Nor can I ping the laptop.

Anyway this was just a secondary effort, as I really need to sort the prob with the router, but no one seems to be able to help with that one!

Thanx for all your help.

Lone :-)

Hi Toby,

I tried to create a shared internet when I did the network connection wizard.

So when I right click on the Tiscali icon in network connections>Properties>Advanced tab>Internet Cnnection Sharing is enabled.
' Allow other network users to connect through this computers internet connection' theres in tick in that box
Also 'Establish a dial up connection whenever a computer on my network attempts to access the internet' thats got a tick in too.

My tiscali BB icon also has Shared after the connected.

But Ivew tried accessing the internet on my lappy but with no luck, the browser goes through detecting proxy settings, then page cannot be displayed and theres nothing in...Internet Options>connections>Dial up and virtual private network settings.

Will I need to add Tiscali in there on my lappy?

Sorry if Im confusing you!

Lone :-)

When I right click on the ad hock wireless connection I get a pop up:
To create a network bridge, you must select at least 2 LAN or high speed internet connections that are not being used by internet connection.

If that helps...

Its difficult to describe as im not doing it in front of me, and it may be one of thoes things that you just need to fiddle with.

Ad-Hock the desktop and laptop like the person above stated... then

On the desktop that connects to the internet and the laptop, you should see two connections on controle pannel>network connections. One of these should be the internet connection via the modem, and the other should be the laptop via Ad-Hoc.

You then need to right click both these two networks, and there should be an options along the lines of "bridge" to bridge the connections. This will then make your desktop a computer into a "bridge" to connect them both.

Make sure when your testing the laptop that you desktop is actually turned on. Also you may want to disable any firewalls as these may cause a problem.

If you are farmilier with ping, you could use this to test you have a connection via all the devices. if your not that i wont go in to that.

Hi,

Ill have a fiddle tonight, see if I can get something going. And yeah I know ping and when I first set up the ad-hoc network, I couldnt ping the laptop from the pc and vice versa, BUT on the laptop, in the wireless connection my IP address was that of the PC network, just the last octet was different and the gateway WAS my pc. So Ill try it all again.

Ill let you know how I get on, one way or the other...

Hi,
I ran the setup a home network again and now I can ping my PC from my lappy and vice-versa.

But in the Network Connections all I have is:

On my lappy: Local Area Connection
Wireless Network Connection
Wireless Network Connection2 (which is what I use for the network).

On the PC:
Tiscali Broadband Connection
Wireless Network Connection2
Local Area Connection

Not sure what to do now, any ideas? Do I need to install the Tiscali Software on my lappy to be able to share the internet?

Lone :-)

OK, I can view/open etc folders on the PC from my lappy, I can remote desktop, but I still cant connect to the internet on my lappy.

Im missing something, I just dont know what?

PS
I now have Tiscali Broadband on FirstBuild in my network connections on my lappy, its an Internet Gateway, but I still cant access a web page, the browser goes through detecting proxy settings, then page cannot be displayed.

And I have in my taskbar Tiscali Broadband Connected on my lappy! AHHH!
