What type of ethernet crossover cable do I need to be able to transfer files between 2 computers. I see there are CAT5, CAT6, and alot of other specification options.

It has passed many people by.. modern gigabit network adapters can auto cross. So if you have normal straight through cables lying around, they can work just fine too

Many 100Mb connections are also auto-uplink, and so will do the crossover for you. It does depend on the machine though.

You are aware you need to statically assign IP's and Subnets to your PC's and other kit if you simply picky back the two like this?

the 1000T standered requires auto crossing. Some 100T are able to auto cross also .. but its not requiered.

also pins 1,2,3,6 are needed for 100mb and 1-8 are needed for 1000MB

Why not take the guess work out and put a switch between the 2, and use 2 patch cables
