CRT or a LCD? ( gaming only,.. wel almost )

well, it looks like my monitor is failing on me after 14 years of service :(
the screen starts to flicker. now, i could screw it open, and repair it, that wouldnet be much of a problem,.. but i though.. maybe its time for a change :)

well, im looking for either a 22" screen ( flat front tube ) with a max resolution of 2048 x 1536 @ 85Hz. this would cost me about 100 ~ 150 euro's ( and the screen wouldnt be new,. but, with a year warranty. )

or, for a 8ms 19" LCD monitor Res 1600 x 1200 , wich would cost me 200 ~ 250 euro's ( new )

wich one would you all suggest to get, im getting my 2nd 6800GT soon ( or 2 7800GTX's . depends if my parents want to pay a bit :P ) so, i wouldnt have much of a problem in high resolutions. also the space is not much of an issue.

I'd go with the 22" crt. Its cheaper, bigger screen, and lasts longer. Only downside is that there not at bright as an LCD, and they take up more space/power.

I'd go with an LCD simply because just about everywhere (forums) you look people have and or are switching and say they will never go back. a 19 inch LCD has 19 inch viewing area where a 19inch CRT has only an 18inch. I honestly never knew why people cared for such high res. I have found that 1280x1024 looks fine. I would rather have a sleek and sexy LCD sitting on my desk with a 19inch screen then a huge box that would consume my entire desk with a 22 inch screen. Or in a CRTs case rather a 21 inch. I've seen many fine CRTs and never have I seen the same sharp 2D screen that I get on my LCD. Playing games with this is also a dream and NFS Most Wanted at 1280x1024 Looks frigging amazing. If bloody extreme high resolutions are what you are looking for then perhaps a Huge box of a screen you should get :). If you can find a Higher res LCD in your budget with a fast enough response time then go for it. I'm happy with gaming in 1280x1024 and when I owned my CRT I still played games at this res even though many could play higher (older games) on my computer.

The company I worked for just bought new 19 inch LCD widescreen monitors from Dell. They are amazing! These monitors replaced a bunch of 19 inch CRT monitors (they gave them away for free, I grabbed two of them). The CRT monitors my boss threw out are in GREAT condition. They are ViewSonic and I am stoked he let me take two of them.... BUT, the new Dell monitors are incredible. There is just no comparison! (and they are pretty cheap, They bought each monitor for under $400.)

Yes I'm getting the wife a widescreen LCD within the new year. I also stumbled across a site that is dedicated to helping those with widescreen displays get their game working (ones that are not supported out of the box) Let me tell you! most of those games on the wide screen LCD look much better then the reguler as there is much more on the screen. Some games appear stretched and smugly though.

check it out. http://www.widescreengamingforum.com/

Edit:

The screenshots! move your mouse cursor over the picture for the widescreen version :). Choose a game from the dropdown menu above the picture for the games list. http://www.widescreengamingforum.com/screenshots.php

Have you seen the new Dell 24 inch widescreen? Wow! Whether you dislike Dell or like Dell computers, you have to take a look at their monitors! I think Samsung actually makes part of it.... but they are reasonably priced and some of them are top of the line.

Yeah, the dell 2405FPW is an amazing monitor. BUT, it is $800-$100. At that price, I would much rahter get the Sony FW900. It is 24" widsecreen, 1080i resolution HD ready for x360, and the color quality is much better than an LCD. And the best part, it is only $300 on ebay. Downside is i weighs about 97 pounds.

Is a good point but the thread is about LCD's or CRT's.

Edit:

I see we are talking about CRT's here still sorry :). I don't know why but I was thinking plasma. That sucker is gonna take up some major real estate on someones desk though.

I love lcd's sleek look and good quality, but crt's are still fine by me. so its up to you. if u want to pay more money for better looking equipment, then go for it.

You think $400 for a 19" LCD is cheap? thats on the expensive side.

I saw an ad at staples a few days ago where they were selling a 19" Samsung LCD for only $200.

i think ill stick to the CRT then.
there is a huge price difference. and i havnt heard any point where the LCD would have a significant advantage over the CRT :)

thx for the input everyone :)

I work in the maritime/shipping/intermodal industry. With that said, I thought I would fill everyone in on a little secret very few people are aware of. This is in no way a bash against Dell or their products but Dell does not even make computers or accessories. Dell is simply the shipper, importer, distributor, or whatever you wish to call them. Their products are imported, slapped with the "Dell Logo" and sold as a Dell computer. Anyways, the point being, Dell monitors probably are made my Samsung or another 3rd party.

Anyways, Archangel, I personally highly recommend an LCD. As Blue mentioned, I am one of those people who switched to LCD and will never go back.

I got sony 18" LCD, and here we have 3 Dell 19" LCD's. We used to have 21" crts, which weighed 80 lbs each when we shipped them back.

I will tell you this. I will NEVER buy a CRT again. Ever.

EVER! :D

Now for a gaming aspect.

The MOST important thing to look at for gaming is the monitors RESPONSE TIME.

If its high (20-30ms) you will experience tracers and a little blurring in 3D shooters. The screen cannot keep up with the graphics.

My sony is older and its a 30ms. Not too bad blurring, but it still does.

Newer ones are running at TEN MS. Incredible. But a little more money for name brand.

Both of mine come with Analog and Digital cables. Digital has better colors; analog is faster. So I stick to the analog, to keep blurring to a minimum. Not a problem if you get the 10-15ms monitors though.

I am currently reccomending... Viewsonic. They are beautifull. And they have a comparison chart of all their products. Very nice.

Almost anywhere you buy, you'll see something scary that says "8 dead pixel return policy".

Don't sweat it. Just buy from a reliable vendor. The only time you ever see those pixels is on a pure white backround. Even then, you don't notice. Heck, you got 1310719 working pixels anyway :D
