Yes. It uses the apt command. It is a debian distro, so should accept all the same commands.

FYI: It comes with chromium out of the box. But I suggest getting strait chrome. Also note the post install script takes about 20 minutes to finish, and you loose windows on the GRUB menu until the install script is done.

So what do I do about that? Also, my processor is i386, Crunchbag is i486, does that make a difference? I want to run XP Home and CrunchBag on one HDD, so does it give the option to easily shrink XP's partition?
 
It is i686. But I am not sure how it works. I am pretty sure that a p4 will run 686 code. I know it runs on my PIII lappy (pretty decently actually). Note you will probably have to use terminal to enable speedstep (I did on both my laptops, but it was automatic on the desktop). See here: http://crunchbang.org/forums/viewtopic.php?id=10435.

Your XP will be on Grub once the post install script is done.

And you need to shrink your partition yourself and create 2 partitions for #!. To shrink it, you need to run a defragmenting program on it (defraggler is a decent one). Then burn a CD (or use a flashkey) of PartedMagic or Gparted (I prefer PartedMagic), and boot to it. Shrink your XP partition by enough for your Linux desired space (20GB or more is my recommendation) + Swap space. Swap is generally 1.5x RAM. I generally double the RAM. Once both partitions are made (Main shuld be EXT4 and swap should be Linux Swap), apply it, and boot to the Crunchbang install CD (Use a CD, it is ungodly difficult to USB install crunchbang) and follow the instructions for the installer. When you get to disk, select manual and set the EXT4 you made to Format | / mount point | and Partition. And then at the bottom select "finished write changes to disk". It will then go forward.
On first boot, make sure to finish the post install script. It takes a while, even on 30Mb/s internet, SSD and i7. So make a cup of Tea (or preferred drink) and enjoy the peace until it is done.

Right...so Defrag my HDD, then boot the CD, Use the shrink option on the CD, I may as well set it to 40gb as its an 80gb hdd, I then need to add an extra 750mb for Swap (as I have .5gb Ram). I then partition the 40gb of unpartitioned space as EXT4 and Swap as LinuxSwap.

Then what exactly?
 
honestly, you will want somewhere around 2GB for swap.

Then you hit apply, and wait for it to tell you it is done. Then boot to the Crunchbang CD and install.
 
Using gParted or PartedMagic. I know XP is short on features, that is why I said download PM or GP in post #4.

And technically you can do it with the crunchbang install CD, but it is more difficult to do that.
 
Would it be possible to talk me through how to do it without Gparted or anything else, because thats gonna add 3 hours to download...I have awful speeds :/ and PartMagic, but its gonna take three hours.. would this work better? As it is only 2mb

I can talk you through it with crunchbang install media, but it will take me a bit to download (probably around 3 minutes) and burn it to a disk to use.

go ahead and out the disk in and go through the install until you get to the partition screen. then hit manual and post back, and I will give you more instructions to go through.

Thanks Wolfe...Its still got about 20 minutes to download. I am lucky today, getting 600kb/s...I usually get 10kb/s haha.

-- Hold on...got to write it on another PC...My laptop doesnt like burning disks, they never boot for some reason.
Or it could be that I cant boot it because its a DVD not a CD. Can I boot to networked drives somehow? Otherwise I cant do it...I was sure it was a DVD drive.
