Crysis... EAH 4870 still not 100% smooth

Hey i'm currently running 4 gb of ddr3 ram, a AMD 6000+ dual core and a EAH4870 512mb ddr5 card..

Anyway, i've got crysis running on very high and 8XFSAA (same prob on 2XFSAA though), and it runs very well, 30-40fps, however if like i drive a hummer into a building jump out with sort of 10-15 ppl around me it sometimes freezes up for a bit of a second, then goes back to 30ish FPS + - (the FPS reading in the corner of the screen doesnt change).. considering this, does this mean that in 6 months i'm likely to need a new graphics card to run the latest games, or is this more likely a programming thing? Not running any patches etc.. Or could it just be my harddrive? 320gb sata2 drive

Also.. every time i overclock my CPU or card even slightly it results in a crash after about 10 minutes playing >< any suggestions?

cheers

I've been getting the same problems when i tried to overclock my video card. I never figured out what the problem was so i just remained on my default settings.

I don't think you will have to get a new gpu. If you run the game fairly stable without doin anything tremendous to it, I think that it should be fine.

What PSU do you have?
Updated windows?
Updated Direct X?
Latest video drivers?
Latest game patches?

It won't happen in 6 months, the 4870's a great card. If anything, your CPU (the same as mine) is a bottleneck for that GPU.

Plus, Crysis is more of an aberration. It's not coded optimally either.

Yeah, I would think it's your CPU holding you back.

The whole OC issue is probably because it's overheating and shutting itself off.

Also, that game gets fairly hardware intensive during the firefights, especially if you have the physics on optimal settings.

The problem is crysis, trust me

my specs:

Intel Q9550 quad core
4Gi Corsair 1033 RAM
Evga Nvidia GTX 260
Asus P5N

If I have it on 1600 x 1200 8x AA the game runs 30ish FPS, but the minute I get around lots of moving models it drops to like 15fps. The game is coded like crap. If I pop in Fallout 3, settings maxed I get over 60fps. I know it is not my system, it is the application. COD4, settings maxed I get around 40fps in open areas it would jump to 50fps. In HL 2 I get 200+ FPS.

In Crysis Warhead, the snow level with the hover craft, I had to bump it down to 1200 x 1024 4x AA and turn down motion blur otherwise it would run at 10fps. My system should be able to handle it, and their engine just sucks hard core.

Interesting, I found that dropping the resolution makes a HUGE difference, I could run Crysis maxed on my old system (see sig: w/ 8800GT OC) on lower resolutions. Oddly, it seemed as though Warhead ran worse than the original Crysis on my PC and, allegedly, Warhead coding is optimized, though it seems all they did was add particle effects and made a bunch of texture clipping.

I have almost the same specs as you and Crysis still runs like crap on max settings for me, and yes if I bump it down a notch it works great.

What a shame b/c the game is cool, warhead was a waste of money b/c I beat the game in like 5 hours.

It truly is a shame, but both of those games on Delta, and Warhead with max physics/particle effects, are truly immersive games. If you haven't tried Delta, you ought to, it's a whole other experience.

DO your other programs/games work fine, because Crysis is a demanding game, so that could just be it. But if they do not work fine, it's most likely a driver problem.
But just remember, Crysis is the game that not even GOD can play on maxed out settings at good fps.

Ahh excellent guys i was hoping someone would say it's most likely the coding.. i really like crysis, one of my favorite games ever, you can knock down so much stuff and hiding in bushes and water is sick as.. I might try an older driver, currently have the latest one.

MY PSU is a thermaltake 440.. which is a bit low but it was expensive and is a good brand, stupid graphics card has 2 power supply's running into it lol XD it only crashes when i overclock so i might not..

Does anyone know what is the fastest CPU u can put on a M8NSLI motherboard? might look at upgrading it

thanks guys

ahh ok i'll probably look at getting a new psu down the track but i really cant afford one atmo, i cant seem to find the crysis patch but i'm currently acquiring warhead, which is abit updated, so interesting to see how it goes

thx guys

I skimmed through what was said I would have to say that perhaps your CPU and not patching are the issue.

I would most likely say the patching...

It kind of runs like crap on my system compared to other games and my system is way above the minimum specs. Crysis Warhead is un playable during the hover craft levels on highest settings, I mean I was getting like 7 to 10 fps on that stage.

The game was coded poorly.
