cryticle system error (HELP)

well guys here goes....

i have just turned pc on and found something has installed ist self some where on my pc, it has olso installed on the bottom task bar

"CRITICAL SYSTEM ERROR"

there is a "?" flashing on my taskbar when you click on it it takes you to a web site "virusburst" asking you to buy software

i know i must have installed this myself when zonealarm flashed an alert, usually good at telling whats bullshit and knocking it back (must have caught me concentrating)

has also installed its self on my "add and remove" in control pannel, you know the score-you try uninstall it and it wont go away (just like a keebab fart LOL)

does zonealarm actually get rid of this or will i need something else??????

Download HJTsetup.exe from this link http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.Please install it there.
Continue to click "next" in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the "Select Addition Tasks" dialogue.
Put a check by "Create a desktop icon" then click "Next" again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click "Finish" and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the "Do a system scan and save a logfile" button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log and post it in this thread.

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip to your Desktop.
Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.


Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Post a copy of this log in your reply also.

Hey funkysnair! What you are doing is okay, but I tried all kinds of stuff to get rid of this one, and the HJT didn't do a thing, not even in safemode was I able to get rid of it. I was getting ready to manually go in and do the hole removal procedure, but found this awesome tool (3 actually)that you just run, and it took care of every single bit of the messed up issue with virusburst.

Go ahead and follow those links and removal instructions if you like. Post a fresh 'HJT' log once your finished as there is another entry of possible concern in your log.

You sound misinformed about HijackThis. It is a dianogstic tool to be used along with other tools/programs during the cleaning process. It 'IS NOT' the 'Cleaning Process'.

every time i click on internet explorer i used to go to google, the only thing is now i get diverted to a website

Download Ewido(AVG Antispyware) http://www.ewido.net/en/download/ then set it up this way http://rstones12.geekstogo.com/ewidosetup.htm You will need this later in safe mode
Make sure to update this program.

Download ATF-Cleaner to your desktop from this link

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following.

After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;

Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;

Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".

Choose your usual account.

Please disable all security programs - Your AV,Ewido, Spyware Doctor, etc as they may interfere with the cleaning process.

Run Smitfraud

* Open the SmitfraudFix Folder, then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool.
* Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
* Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
* You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.
* The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode.Save this log.

From safemode, run HijackThis and put a check by the following entries if still present, close all open windows and browsers except HijackThis and click 'Fix Checked'

Exit Hijack This but remain in safe mode.

Run Ewido - make sure of the following settings.

Select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
Under "Reports"

Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Save this scan log.


Run ATF-Cleaner from safe mode.Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use firefox also, select at top of ATF cleaner-tick Select all and run again.

Reboot into normal windows, run ATF cleaner again and post a fresh 'HJT' log along with the safemode scan logs from Ewido and SmitFraudFix.
