CSS Server

Alright.
A friend of mine that hosts a CSS server said that I would be able to host one. I told him my internet speeds and he said I can get around 16 people, no lag.

My speeds are.

Download Speed: 5250 kbps (656.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 653 kbps (81.6 KB/sec transfer rate)

Will this work?

I dont know about 16 people, but you should be able to get close to that with minimum lag. Do you want the server to play with a few friends, or want to make a really popular 12-16 person server?

This will be a dedicated server. Unless your friends live close to you I dont know about low ping.

It would mainly be a public server...

And my goal isnt 16 people. But yeah.

I can set this public server up all for free right?

Once you set it all up Gamer, post the details. I'll be glad to play with you guys...Until then, its HL2DM for me:)

Alright.

The tut. will tell me what ports to forward, right?

Whats the best tutorial for setting this up?

Thanks.

If anyone has to download any mods, maps, sounds, or whatever special config you put on your sever it will kill your bandwidth. Why do you think hosting companies can get away with charging 100 dollars per month for a clan to host a server on their fiber?

In my experience, and yes I used to manage a clan server for CS like before 1.0 came out, your upload limits kill you in the end. HLDS hasn't changed either from my understanding so its not like it runs any better than it did 8 years ago.

High traffic servers only use about 5 to 10 GB of bandwidth a month, but that is because they load all their down-loadables to a separate FTP server that is not on the game server system itself.

I had a AMD K6 machine [333mhz] running plain CS on a dedicated server.
Could do up to 6 people no problem, anything after that was hell.
That was with a standard 768k line, however.
