Curious about Firefox 4

Hey all,

I'm interested in the new Firefox 4, but I'd like to know if I can make it import all my history and bookmarks and passwords and stuff like that. I've currently got Firefox 3.6.16, and I've downloaded the 4.0 installer, but if possible I would really like to upgrade and keep all my history and settings and all that. Any thoughts/experiences? Thanks.

^this.

If you use add ons you're better off holding off until most of them get updated. There's only a very small number available for 4 atm.

I made the transfer to FF4. Only one of my plugins did not work but I found another that did the same job. I now have FF4 looking virtually identical to FF3.

Upgrade. If your add-ons don't work, you'll most definitely find new ones that do the same thing.

Thanks for the responses; you guys making me reconsider my last post!! :) If I just upgrade (as opposed to uninstalling 3.6 and clean-installing 4.0), will it save my history and bookmarks as they are currently?

That has already been answered as yes. I use a custom throbber for use with my scripts and even that is the same as before. You will find that you have to move things around to get it to look like FF3. That's a given. Functionally it's no different to going to the next version of FF3, where sometimes plugins don't work either. As I noted, mine really is no different than what I had with FF3.

If you can't figure out how to move things, google or post here.

I like it so far. Didn't like how it hid the menu bar and tabs were on top, and it also likes to launch in fullscreen rather than just maximised, but other than that it works great.

Mine does not so there has to be a setting for that. I'm using the Firefox 3 theme so that may make a difference. I don't remember it automatically going fullscreen at any time however.

Your other layout concerns can be easily changed.

Whenever a new version of FF is installed, it installs over the previous version so everything is saved.

I didn't like it at first either. I thought it looked too "Chromey" but I left it and just got used to it.

Well gentlemen, I took the plunge, and it's been fine so far!! Apart from fact that it's faster and the Back/Forward buttons are gray instead of green, I can't tell much difference. It didn't hide the menu bar on me, but I may experiment with that a little sometime. I'll still keep using Chrome as well, as I have for a while now, but FF4 seems to be good.

Oh, and the only two extensions that didn't work were (1.) Microsoft .NET Framework Assistant 1.2.1, and (2.) Skype extension for Firefox 4.2.0.5198. I't doesn't make a bid deal, as I don't use either of them anyway.
