I was at tiger direct today, looking at some new processors for my desktop. i have an inspron 530. its garbage. So, I thought i would look into making a custom computer. If anyone could help me out by telling me where to start and some part buying tips, it would be much appreciated. My price range is around 750-1000$

Thanks.

I also agree, that is a great set up. It's pretty close to mine. But Instead of the 5770 graphics card get the xfx 4890, you will not be let down. I like new egg but the xfx 4890 is $170 at best buy. Its the same price as the 5770, but will out perform the 5770 like there's no tomorrow. Anyone will agree. The only reason people like the 5770 is because it a cheap card that runs dx11 games, but there are only a handfull of them and they wont turn to dx11 for another few years.

But! if you have the money and could spend another $100 on the graphics card (if you like gaming then why not) you can super proof your comp with the Asus 5850. I got this after I owned the 4890. The asus 5850 has a voltage tweak unlocked so that you can overclock is farther than the 5870 and still keep it under warrenty (love asus =]). Asus and one other brand have the voltage tweak unlocked. It's worth the $300, and there is an HDMI port :good: made my life better and easier. Oh yea, and the asus 5850 has dx11.

Hope this helps

Why? ATI has the market at the moment. Almost all of their cards have better performance for a lower price.
Also, Nvidia's cards don't offer DirectX 11 yet, which is what games will be using before very long.

Yup, ATi has GPUs, AMD has budget CPUs and Intel for performance CPUs.

Also, the 4890 may outperform the 5770, but the 5770 has newer features on it...DX11 being one of them. Get it.

If you want a future proof card, get the 5770, if you want a card that will completely outperform that, get the 4890. Yea the 5770 supports dx11, but why get it if it won't run the games that great, especially for more demanding dx11 games that will come out in a few years.

I like Nvidia as well, but they are right, ATI holds the market. I switched form Nvidia to ATI because price to performance ratio, ATI overpowers Nvidia

^ I picked that mobo for a reason. It has x16/x16 xfire on it. He could easily pop in a second 5770 somewhere down the line and be fairly set for this entire generation of games. Maybe a PhysX card as well for that extra little boost.

edit: Wait...why are we even arguing this? TS could add like $30 to the budget and go for a 5850.
