ok, i have a custom built pc that my uncle built. does that mean that i can pretty much change around and upgrade what ever. and also, can you build your own computer with a case from another computer in which you took all the components out. (sorry for noob questions, i'm trying to learn as much as i can about computers and their components)

ya its always easy to swap parts wghether it is Custom built or not, make sure there compatible though lol, and ya you can use an old case and swap everything, but make sure it has decent air flow newer parts need more air

well, i dont have specs yet. you see he built the computer for my family like 2-3 years ago. since it was free he didnt really use the best of the best parts. so i'm going to look at it and see what should be upgraded. all i know is that it has 80g hd. now, i'm pretty sure there is a way to check the specs somewhere on the computer, but i forget how. or do i need to take off the case and look at the parts?

id recommend dowloading belarc advisor and run a test it gives you your specs, and for general specs you can just click start riht click on My computer and go to properties those are some of the specs

rrrr, it doesnt show ram...

processor: intel pentium 4 cpu 2.80GHz
like i said: 80gig hd
intel 82865 graphics controller

hmm, what else...?

i dont see it, oh, well i will look all my specs and everything, and then ask for some better help....until then, i have one more question, when looking for parts, (wait, now i have 2 questions)
1) what could be improved in my computer's performance if i get a newer motherboard

2) how can i tell if something is compatible with my motherboard? or computer in general?

no, when i say improved with new mother board, i mean like, does a better one allow for a better connection with expansions, or does it allow components to run faster and smoother....what does the motherboard itself do?

It allows you to upgrade what matters, the CPU and Ram. Also with a new motherboard will come other options, like onboard Lan, Audio and Video. But onboard video sucks, so do not go that route.

With a new motherboard you can use your old hard drives, CD/DVD burners and sound card. But if you have an older mother board that had AGP video, then you will need to upgrade to a PCI_E video card.

You will most likely have to upgrade/replace the ram from your older motherboard, since the types of ram have changed over the years.

The motherboard is the heart of the system. Everything connects to it.

so basically how good and new your motherboard is reflects how good and new the components can be that is put on it?
