Customizing Computers

I am looking into getting a new computer and im becoming tempted to build my own. I would be using the computer generally for music, recording and producing. The intel core 2 duo sounds like a good processor and a friend of mine told me that RAM would help me run programs to maximum capability. My budget is around $1200. Any ideas???

You can get a very, very decent PC for 1200, USD right?

The only question now is if you will need a complete system with drives like DVD/CD, monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc.

1200 will indeed get you a nice system. However, if music and web browsing are all you need to do, something built on that budget may be overkill. If you're going to do any gaming, though, you'll want everything to be high end.

If it's not going to be used for any gaming, you can probably build a very nice computer for your needs with a lower cost.

You can get a nice computer to surf the internet, listen to music, simple word processing and no gaming for around 800 USD, 1200USD for a non-gaming system is a waste of cash.

I think my total for a gaming PC(no lag) for my brother was like $915, I OC'ed a P4 541 from 3.2 to 3.52Ghz and slapped a 9500 on it. I added on a 7600GS, too. However, this is not top of the line. I would go Pentium D or C2D E6300.

I started with a p3 computer and built it piece by piece. I've replaced the motherboard and processor twice in the last 2 years. The system I have would have cost about $10000 if I ordered it prebuilt, but in total I've spent about $6500. My advice is to start with a bare bones quad core system and add on to it when you can afford it. Keep as much of your old hardware as you can and replace it one component at a time. You'll end up with a much better system in the long run for the same money

madtownidiot, i know this is kinda irrelevant but to do with your computer specs, why would you bother using the fastest CPU with 2 32" screens on a GFX card like that? no offence buddy but i think with them specs you should probably invest in a better graphics card. if you are into gaming then really you are wasting your time with the powerful cpu if your gfx card can't keep good FPS on the screens...

You're absolutely right. But it is nice to be able to run Doom3 and play music at the same time and the second monitor has my desktop up while I'm playing games. Was planning on buying a graphics card when I upgraded everything else, but I maxed out my credit.
