Cutting Power

I want to cut power to the DVD drive, Floppy Drive, and 56K Modem on my laptop to reduce power consumption and extend battery life. My first thought was to disable the devices in Device Manager, but I don't think that cut power because I can still open and close the DVD Drive. So my question is, how do I "turn off" parts of the laptop that I don’t want to use?

You can't as far as I know, the only way is to physically break the connection which is not only unadvisable it can also damage the components. The components only use smidgens of power when they're idling so you have no worries about power consumption.
 
Also, when your not using the cd drive or floppy, then they shouldnt be using any power anyways.
 
Alright then, I was just reading something a few minutes ago suggesting that you disable things you are not using to save power. Not correct I guess...
 
By far, the main users of power on a laptop are the screen and the processor. If you turn down your screen brightness, that will help a lot. If you have a processor that automatically throttles down when it's not doing heavy processing, that's a help too.
