Cuztomizing Windows.

I wish to re-customize windows now that everything is re-installed onto a new harddrive.

I'd rather not just use widnwo blinds or something similar again, i'd like to cuztomise it myself if possible so I haeva few questions

1. Is the start button and all that kind of stuff linked to a image that shows? where is this images location? Is it like a webpage, so you could just replace the image with another image named exacty the same and it would use that image instead?

2.any guides online for doing this?

3/How time consuming do you think this'll be?

Thats dumb, they should have known people would want to change it, and then made the images and system files seperate...

Well i guess that would make it easy for viruses and stuff to change it..or Spyware/Adware, I could just see it changing your task bar to
"Free Viagra! www.somelamesite.com"

Any other imput from anyone?

I assume the replacing pictures will need thesame pixil size and everything?

microsoft don't want you to change thier program.. its free advertising if they have the little windows sign on the start button and EVERYWHERE in the freakin OS! lol

God i hat it when people do that, its Microsoft, maybe MS, but WTF is M$ supposed to mean..... "Oh yes, i work for M-dollar, what do you do."

M$ = Microsoft. It's not supposed to be proper english man.

M$ is a cheap shot at Microsoft, because they are jsut after your MONEY (hence the $ sign)

Want some proof? Go look up how much an advanced help call costs to their support center. $35 for a phone call. And some phone calls cost over $100 (it's on the M$ site)

I've called them b4, and once you start asking what they consider "advanced" questions, they say you have to pay them $35 for any more additional help. That's where i usually hang up and call again and try to keep the questions more simple lol. I've never gotten to the REALLY expensive calls b4 though.

anyways...i saw "M$" on many other forums, so i decided to use it. and its alot easier to type than "Microsoft".

I only use M$ operating systems because they are free to me,and i learned to use computers on them. Other than that i dont use any of M$ software. No M$ Office, nothing.

now stop it your really killing me, stop the bloody M$ thing, its not good. And i know what it stands for already.

Where on the MS site does is say that, i have called before, never got more then a normal charge.

and I asked, not him.

If you think "M$" is out for you money and is so horrid, then i suggest you never use Windows again.

So does anyone have anymore info on CUSTOMIZING WINDOWS?

i was on the phone for about 10 minutes trying to get M$ office to re-activate. after being transfered a few times, they told me my questions were "advanced" and a service fee of $35 would be charged for any additional help. i hung up.

M$ is out for your money...just like anybody else selling any kind of product. thats the simple truth. and i'll use M$ OS's as long as i can keep getting them for free. They are easy to use, and probably are the #1 OS in use worldwide. But jsut because it's the most popular, doesn't make it the best.

as far as customization...be wary of what you change in the registry. Cuz' if you call M$ trying to fix your registry tweaks/hacks...i would bet they ask you for some cash before helping you beyond the basics.

ITs called a back-up ;)

Also i still dont see where you are getting that information from????? the ink to the webpage doesn't have that info in it.....

Also your a cheap little !@#$%^& with windows arn't you? Its not THAT much if you just get the UPGRADE versoin. I had a computer that had windows 3.1, in it and came with the CD since then i bought nothihng but "upgrade" versoins. They are only around 80$.(for XP)

and it says there is not a current installation of windows please put in a CD from a past windows and names them all, although it doesn't name windows 3.1, it still works.

and what kind of company can you expect NOT to want you money? "no no, its already take out products for free, wait no, i'll even throw in a few 20$ bills in there for you to"

the first paragraph is from another page. the second paragraph i linked. it's right on the page...sry if u cant find it. my point was...if you have to pay for technical support, then i wouldn't go with that company. i dont know of ANY other company that you have to PAY to get help with THERE products. free 24/7 customer service should be totally free...not free up until you actually start asking real questions.

$80 is alot to someone who can't get a job and only gets ~$50 a month from odd jobs. i've applied all over my city for a few months now...not on job offer. but i'm still trying.

lets see...i can name 2 operating systems that are 100% free and work BETTER than Windows. Mac OSX for x86, Linux (name any distro here...there are many MANY.) There are more...but i haven't used them, so i cant say they are better than Windows.

are you even interested in the Start mod/hack? Because i posted a link a few posts up explaining how to do it step by step.

Yes I am, just seeing if anyone else had anything for anythign else, and thanks for it by the way :)

and I can think of many that you pay for to call them, also why are you using windows if the others work so much BETTER?

because on the home network Windows works the best. I tried RedHat 9 and it wasn't happy on our network (actually wouldn't even go on network lol.) If i could totally revamp the home network...it'd all be Linux. But then i'd have to learn alot more about linux..and teach EVERYONE in my home how to use Linux. not gonna happen:(

i was born and raised with Windows...so i'm most familiar with it. thats not my fault lol.

If it was that much better you would use it, anjd you would have windows as a secendary for your family.

if it doesn't work with Windows, and has constant problems on the network...how can i use it? i admin a forum, and pretty much NEED the internet 24/7 for stuff like that. i can't troubleshoot my computer everyday to try and get internet for a few hours before it disconnects again...it needs to be ready when i'm ready. so Windows has to be primary.

now i'm still trying out Linux distros. Ubuntu is next. and if i get it to work better than RedHat9, you can be sure i replace Windows :)
