Cyclic Redundancy Error

I recently transfered all of my mp3s and documents from my 60gig hd to a newly installed 250gig..both WD drives, both IDE. I have been backing up everything by copying and pasting to a WD My Book External. Today when I tried to copy and paste, I got Cyclic Redundancy Errors on 3 (possible more) mp3s and could not copy. Now if I open both drives at the same time and drag and drop to copy the files, then I dont' get anything. So my two questions are:

1. What would cause a CRC copying one way and not another, and why did that suddenly happen?

2. Since I'm just copying and pasting, is there a FREE program to backup documents by telling the program which folders and files to copy and having it able to do it automatically or manually?

FYI..Windows XP SP2, 60gb master, 250gb slave, 400gb my book external (USB)

A CRC error usually means theres a problem with the media (usually you see these errors generated by CDs) but copying the file again might give the same error and it might not. Try running a thorough scan disk

so this would mean there could be a problem with the hard drive I'm copying from, or the external hard drive being copied to?

I tried copying just by dragging and dropping and it worked fine. I also have played the mp3s with no problems and have backed up since with Windows Backup. Maybe I was just copying too much at one time...
