d$ e$ What Does This Do/Mean

I'm an entry level IT guy. In MS Windows I've used this syntax before with the direction of my IT manager, something like e$ then an IP address. The only thing is I don't really understand what this means and how else the "$" in windows would be used. Would some be nice enough to give a dumbed down explaination and some examples of the $ syntax character. Thanks.

the dollar sign also hides folders in Windows from network discovery. So, if I make a folder called $supercoolstuff with a dollar sign in front of it, anyone browsing my computer via networking, it will not be visible.

The dollar sign is used in almost every programming language as well.
