dad's computer freezes

basically whenever you run a virus or anti-spyware scan it freezes... and mozilla firefox uses 100% cpu for some reason. ive tried running it in safe mode and scanning but to no avail. i told him to back everything up on my 250gb hdd and reformat but he absolutely refuses to. i have a feeling either his hard drives are dying which is possible because they run nice and hot... and hes definitely got a virus because of mozilla using 100% of his athlon 64 2800+

any suggestions of fixing these problems are appreciated.
 
just symantec anti-virus, ad-aware se professional, or mozilla firefox individually freeze the computer... of course, ctrl+alt+delete still work... so its not completely frozen.
my dad also claims that the internet works extremely slow but that could just be the servers for the sites that he's connecting to...
the CF's server seems to be running quite quickly so im sure the slow internet isn't on our end...
 
no, it wouldnt be the pc, did you run a Panda scan? if you can, run that, and post th log, in this thrad, or in Computer Security.
