Damage to the screen!?!

I read that the screensaver privents damage to my screen, why and how is that? Will the screen get damaged if i have the same screen showing on for a long time?How can it make sense?

They used to, very few if any monitors have this happen anymore. If you've ever seen a screen with what looks like a 2nd image, thats what screensavers were designed to prevent.
 
It prevents an image from being burned onto the screen by changing what is displayed often.
 
If you leave an image on a monitor for a long time (it takes a lot longer then just a few days), then the image will get burned into the screen. Lets say that the login screen was burned into the monitor, its not giong to be so noticable that it will look like the monitor is on when its not, you will jsut be able to notice it if the monitor is off, or if your monitor is showing a blank page.
 
wow, never realized that the image can burn on the screen. So when u say that this used to happen, u mean old monitors? Why?
 
It has to do with the limitations of technology at the time. When the same image was being displayed for extended periods the phosphor coating that allows the monitor to hold brightness while the electron beam isn't hitting a a given spot on the screen starts to hold the image even when it's not being drawn anymore (such as when the monitor is off).
 
a little fyi

you get the same burn in problems with some tvs (projection, plasma) but not with crt tvs (well, it would take a lonnng long time) and lcd's are ok too (different technology, they dont use phosphor).
