data execution prevention window

have recently done a windows update and once again Microsuck put something annoying on my PC.
a window appears out of nowhere called --- DATA EXECUTION PREVENTION --- and it seems to only come up when i have windows explorer open. have yet to discover if its a certain directory that is setting it off.

oh yeah, and when it pops up it insists i close windows explorer :(

does anyone else have this issue (read: annoying problem)?
is there a way to turn it off?

my PC is generally well kept (no virus, malware etc).
am using winXP PRO SP3

i was looking it up today a little bit and was surprised it was installed with SP2 which i did AGES AGO.

i narrowed it down to my external 500gig WD drive. i have ONLY MOVIES on that one and tytteboys explanation sounds right.

now if only we knew which retarded codec it is???

thanks for your help, much appreciated!!!

The problem seems to have originally started following seeing the most recent updates go on or only partially install?! The DEP is kicking in possibly for that reason not any codec sitting idle on an external drive if you are seeing this when simply going to open any explorer window.

It sounds like the explorer.exe file is being hampered by one of the updates seeing a bad install. But you can roll back a few of those by going into the add/remove programs and check off the show all updates option. See if you had selected any optional hardware/software updates as well.
