The ones I've had most success with are Fast File Recovery and File Scavenger. FFR used to be by ESS - I don't know if the current offering of the same name by another company is the same thing. The above are payware and not cheap. Try all the free ones first!
I've never had much success with image recovery. Recovering jpgs and bmps, even within a day, I've found most corrupt. Lose part of the header and you are done. Text and such seem more robust.
One assumes your mention of "formatted" does not refer to a re-format. In that case you will need forensic level equipment!

If all you did is a quick format, Recuva should be fine - I've used it to recover pictures and other stuff from formatted and corrupted (plug in and Windows says it needs a reformat) drives, usually with success too.
