Data storage

Hi
Can someone please advise on the what would be best for us to get for additional storage. Its to store all my accounts (self employed), photos etc on.
I bought a Seagate GoFlex hard drive (500GB) at the weekend on the advice of a certain computer shop, but it seems this is meant for backing up a PC rather than just to store things on, which is what we want. I'm no expert so perhaps I'm wrong about the Seagate, I dont know.
Anyway, what would be best for us to go for, memory stick, desktop hard drive of a different type or what???
Or would someone like to advise me on the Seagate, as at the moment its being used as a paper weight (its not much good for that either)
Cheers

You can use the external drive as a data storage drive. You can always get another internal hdd if your case allows it for added storage.

The best sollution is a couple of internal drives. As you have very important data on there, getting 2 drives in raid 1 or 3 drives in raid 5 would provide additional storage and have better fault tolerance in case of drive failure whilst keeping backups

I have made my own custom 8 bay HDD storage device which I have called MAIN UAC DATA COMPLEX CENTER.

First 4 hard disk drives are used to store/backup/clone ALL the data I have.In short...EVERY SINGLE BYTE I HAD,CURRENTLY HAVE AND WILL HAVE/CREATE IN THE FUTURE,whatever the data is.

Other 4 hard disk drives are the EXACT copies of the first 4 hard disk drives in the case if those first 4 hard disk drives die.And of course the automatic data backup process of ALL data is being performed each 24 hours using the program I made.I guess I just don't believe so much to other programs made by someone else lol.

All 8 hard disk drives are Seagate and the capacity of each one of them is 500 GB which is 4 TB in total.

Also if you want your data to be very well protected, you can do what I did. Here is the picture:

I hold ALL my data on it and some of it is very classified and for that reason I must also secure it as best as possible from intruders of any kind. When I say SECURE I do not mean something like putting a password on the HDD and data and the encryptions and things like that.Sure I will do all that plus a LOT more, but what I am also going to do is to protect the area in which the MAIN UAC DATA COMPLEX CENTER will be located.By that I mean that I will have audio sensors, movement sensors, video surveillance, glass break sensors and so on.That might sound like TOO PROTECTED,but like I said...I have very very very classified data which I cannot afford to be stolen so I must make the best protection possible.

So if your data is so classified and important to you too,do what I did lol.Or don't :D

Also make sure that the door of the room where you hold your data are very well design and firmly so that even someone with a gun or shotgun cannot break inside.
Mine look approximately like this:

And on them I have put the following sign:

And of course make sure that the air in that room is cool and not warm so that your storage device works good and that it's not overloading because of high temperatures.Since hard disk drives spin very fast, they produce a lot of heat inside and their life cycle will be shorter. The more heat there is,the bigger chance for them is to stop working sooner or later.I use something like this:

It is not visible on my first picture because it's on the beginning of the room (at the back).
But I'll tell you one thing.Every time I enter that room,I am freezing as hell lol.Thank God that's rarely since I use the UAC device from the computer in the other room so I do not have to enter inside at all.

Well I think that covers it enough lol.

By the way you must always just in case be ready if someone steals that storage device from you.But with all this protection that is almost impossible,BUT if for some huge mirracle that DOES happen,be sure that ALL the data is secured so damn well so that the person who stole that device from you cannot do a God damn thing. This is how I did it just in case:

You need to have 10 USB sticks. Each USB stick contains a big part of information.Once all 10 USB sticks are connected, those 10 information parts become one and once the program (in this case my own) sees that all 10 information parts are connected/available then it will enable you to use the storage device. In my case that is the MAIN UAC DATA COMPLEX CENTER.But if just ONE of those 10 USB sticks is missing, then the person who stole that device from you cannot do absolutely nothing. Also the person must have a special program (in this case my own) which will open the data on that storage device using those 10 information parts.
I have used a simple 10 port USB hub for that purpose. It looks like this:
10Port-USB-Hub.jpg

Also (and this is very important) while I am at work or simply not at home for some reason,I made a small program which watches on every single file.By WATCHING I mean on the following:

-creating files
-changing files
-renaming files
-deleting files
-opening files

So if someone comes to my computer or connects to my computer from somewhere else and does ANY of those 5 things,I am immediately notified by E-mail and the computer and the MAIN UAC DATA COMPLEX CENTER immediately shuts down completely and an alarm signal also starts.

Well I think this covers it enough. So if your data is important, you can do this what I did.

Or you can just buy a hard disk drive and put it in your computer's case lol.:D

Cheers!

Also the same guy that thinks 32kb of RAM is all you need "if you know how to use an OS properly".

I would suggest online backup as well as what Aastii said as there is no point having a redundant system if it all gets knicked.

32 KB??? Hey now wait a minute lol.32 KB is too little even for me.I never said 32 KB lol.All I said is that nobody needs 4 GB of RAM memory for simple things like youtube, facebook and other internet surfing.

As for online backup, many people seems to like it,but I don't because my data is just too classified to be on other places on which I do not have control. So I would rather have it on one single place and on that way I am 100% sure that nobody else except me has that data.
As you all know...once you put something on the internet,it stays on the internet forever lol.So no thanks, but I would rather not put my data online.

Besides online storage is also on HDDs/SSDs and other types of media storage devices which can ALSO die all of a sudden at any time just like mine.
So you can never be 100% secured.:D

But I am 99% secured hahaha!
I wonder what else I should add to my data protection to be 100% secured.Hmmm...any ideas xD ?

Almost all online backup (paid especially) has a 99.8% SLA. Thats better than a condom.

Haha condom xD!

Well yea I agree with that. That's true. But like I already said...the data I have is just too classified and too important to just put it somewhere online so that someone else who is not authorized can see it.And because of that,I must NOT put that data on ANY place except mine for which I am 100% sure that only me and other authorized personnel can see and NOBODY else.

Please stop posting in this thread now stars, what you are offering is off topic and not helpful at all. If you want to offer some proper advice that is fine but if you have nothing serious to add please be kind enough to leave and stop ruining the thread for op
