Ddos

Hey guys,

I was wondering if you could help me. I am trying to run an online community and we keep getting attacked by someone. Apparently it's called DDOS where they somehow send lots of data from your website to the hosts and it crashes the website.

I heard anyone can just DDOS any website. I know this isn't true and it's not an easy thing to do. Because I know loads of communities that are huge and don't get DDOS.

Can you please help me provide some solutions, I want to stop the attacks because whoever is doing it seems they can do it whenever they want.

I have recieved some suggestions that a firewall will help protect me from these attacks. Is there a firewall I can use that will be capatable for windows server 2008?

Thank you and any help will be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Luke

False. There are several "tools" out there that allows anyone to do it, all you do is one or two things and click a button. Any script kiddy or anyone else for that matter can do it

Yes, if i was you I'd setup a firewall. I don't know of any good ones for windows server, but I know that there are plenty of linux firewalls you can set up on a spare box for websites.

Firewalls won't help against DDOS attacks. Yes, they do prevent people from gaining access to your computers, but that's not what DDOS aims to do. DDOS is essentially a whole lot of "nodes" (such as computers of script kiddies) sending bogus requests to your server in such large numbers that the network connection simply becomes congested with illegitimate traffic. By the time this DDOS traffic hits your firewall, it's too late; it's already taken up some of your bandwidth that could have been utilised by a legitimate client.

Umm, okay? I don't know what you mean by this, but I am just trying to find a solution to my problem. I'm trying to run a community with people on board.

The hosts have taken down the sever because they claim its threatening everyone else on their business. It sounds like they have some serious protection issues. Although from what I've head, people have been paying over 100 pounds for their hosting...

The link I posted talks about setting up some sort of proxy server infront of the client in order to filter out malicious traffic attacks. However it does cost a lot of money for that type of protection.

Is there any free way of stopping such an annoying attack?

Everything depends on the size of attack and, of course your budget. I tried vistnet.com and am currently with them.

If you have shared hosting plan for your website, then there's nothing much you can do about it. Your (web)host must provide the safety for your site, you should need to contact them.
