Ddr & ddr2

I'd been asked to upgrade the RAM on a desktop pc. I ran the diagnostic tool on crucial.com and ordered the 3 x 512Mb PC3200 memory strips. When I've tried to install them only one of the strips fits (DDR), the other two free available slots have a different pin position ( looks like DDR2). Why would a motherboard have 2 DDR memory slots and 2 DDR2 memory slots? I was under the assumption you couldnt have both?

Also, why didn't the Crucial diagnostic tool pick up the fact that two of the slots were DDR2 and two of them were DDR? Its stated all four slots were DDR?

Many thanks.

as far as i know a board wouldn`t use two different kinds of memory, basic question but have you tried turning the memory module round the other way.

i agree. this is the first time i heard a motherboard using two different kinds of memory. what is your machine by the way?

Run Belarc Advisor to double check the specs. It is free and reliable.

There are a few motherboards out there that have both slots, ddr and ddr2 But you can't use them at the same time.

As said, we would need to know what motherboard you have or if it was a store bought machine what brand and model number of the pc.

^+1

there are boards that can handle two different kinds of memory, however they will only handle ONE kind at any given time, so if you want to increase speed, to say the DDR2 set, you will only be able to run the DDR2 and have to abandon the other slots.

Just to add, you really really shouldn't even try to power up with both DDR and DDR2 sticks. there are cases of it causing physically damage to the board/sticks and I think its one of the things which void the warranty on those boards

Looks like my client has one of the few motherboards with both modules!!

He has another pc, had 1Gb which he wanted upgrading to 2Gb, so again, ran the tool and found it needed 2 x 512Mb sticks. Put them in and the system still only recognises 1Gb, no matter how I have the sticks, ie Ive tried with the new sticks in the holders already being used and the old RAM in the two spare slots etc, no matter what combination it only picks up 1 Gb which to me means the only reason can be is that the pc doesn't like 1Gb of RAM from one manufacturer and 1GB from another?? Sound right??

This bloke really has picked two cack pc's lol/

Not really, you can mix different brand of RAM...
What is the motherboard model?

Ordered two more of the new RAM sticks and it picks them all up so he now has the required 2 Gb. I can only think the two older modules were a different Mhz rate.

Thanks for everyones input, much appreciated.
