DDR2 Compatibility

Hey I was just wondering about DDR2 compatibilty with motherboards. I know that DDR2 seems to be better, but when I check new motherboards for compatibilty they say compatible with DDR. Can you just put DDR2 into the DDR Memory slots on the mother board? Just wondering this before I buy anything. Thanks.
