DDR2 in DDR slots?

Is DDR2 a different shape from DDR RAM? I have a standard DDR RAM motherboard (Made by Gigabyte) which I bought a year ago, will DDR2 go in it? I know DDR2 is supposed to be faster, but does it requite a different socket from DDR RAM?

yes it is a different shape, DDR2 will not fit in a DDR space and vice versa, the notch is in a different place on each and the pin density is greater on DDR2 ram. DDR is 184 pin, DDR2 is 240 pin

As Jimmy said, DDR2 is a different socket, but more importantly has a different voltage requirement. So even if you were able to get a DDR2 to fit, you would fry the RAM socket, and possibly the motherboard and RAM. DDR requires a higher voltage then DDR2 does.
