ddr2 video card vs. ddr3

As I mentioned in a thread on the "desktop" forum, I took out my GeForce 8400 GS 256mb ddr2 video card which was causing computer to give beep codes.
If I were to purchase a new card, would it have to be a ddr2 or could it be ddr3? I believe memory is ddr2 also.

do you know if the card was AGP or PCI-E? google it and look at images if you don't know, they look different.

then just go to newegg and grab i'd say a 210 or something, they are cheap and weak but stronger than a 8400gs IIRC.

It can be any. Provided you have a power supply that can power the card and you have the appropriate expansion slot (All recent cards PCI-e, older cards AGP or PCI), it will work. The VRAM doesn't matter like RAM does where a motherboard and chipset will only support one standard, with a few exceptions, you have had a GDDR5 card on an original socket 775 board, it will work
