DDR333 and DDR2 swapable?

Hey guys,

I have a friend who has a 3-year old laptop that still runs really well (I just reformatted for her). The only thing I recommended to her was to add more RAM. Unfortunately, her computer uses an old DDR333 PC2700 RAM from back in the old days. I don't think it's possible, but will I be able to put more recent DDR2 RAM (or anything else cheaper than the DDR333) in, seeing as how the DDR333 RAM is crazy expensive nowadays?

Thanks for the help

DDR memory is seen on 184pin dimms while DDR2 is on 240pin. These are two different forms of memory. What make and model is the laptop? The specifications will show if it supports PC3200 or just limited to 333mhz memory. A quich search at shopping sites will show what brand of memory is seen for the lowest prices.

Unless they are Laptop SODIMMs then they are both 200pin ;) but they still are not interchangable and a DDR SODIMM will not fit in a DDR2 SODIMM slot.

Well that would be another question there as to whether that is a laptop or desktop being referred to. Some recent boards will run both types of ram however. But you still have to run one type or the other not mixed. Asrock of all makes of boards sees that on a few models.

Gee? I could still fire up that old 1982 Epson HX-20 notebook with 512kb of onboard memory if I had some rechargable C batteries and microcassettes! :P The ac adapter for charging the batteries wouldn't be any good however.

My computer has 2 512mb ddr2 sticks atmo but could i put ddr3 in there ?
And is ddr3 better than ddr2 and if so .... why ?

He did say it, it was the first sentence:

No you can't use DDR3 in a DDR2 board, they are different (even though they are both 240 pin).

Next time dont hikack a thread though.

Try checking some of the smaller used computer shops. You can usually find used memory that works perfectly for much cheaper than you can get it on the internet and every once in a while you can get stuff for free if you're willing to dig through a back room and take it out of a dead computer yourself.
