Dead 6600GT

My mom's computer has a 6600GT in it and there was a wire preventing the fan from spinning. I am guessing the chip overheated and is permanently damaged because the screen is now totally messed up with lines and different colors everywhere. Does anybody agree that the chip probably overheated because of no air flow from the fan? And that that is the reason for the messed up display?
 
I actually dont think its permanently damaged, because it should shut itself off if it overheats. When you moved the wire and with the fan spinning, it still made those lines? Try putting the video card in your computer and see if it does the same thing.

It still had lines after I had the fan spinning again. She said she saw the lines appear the next time she started up the computer. I might put it in my computer but I still think the chip is damaged. Why don't you think it is permanently damaged?

Just doesnt seem like have the fan stop spinning will cause that. It's not like video cards get insanely hot if your just using Windows (unless she was using photoshop or something). I was thinking maybe a Windows file got corrupted and thats why shes seeing the lines.

I don't think so because the fan stopped spinning a few days ago (I know because she said she heard a loud noise and I could tell that it was a wire hitting a fan from the way she described it). I was too lazy to check it out. She said the noise stopped and the next day the video card craps out. I went to investigate and sure enough the fan was stuck cause of the wire. So from all that I concluded that the chip must have overheated.
 
It is possible it fried, but you'll know for sure if you install it in a different computer, that way you know the only cause could be the video card.
 
Turns out it wasn't the video card that was the problem (very strange coincidence that stuff went wrong right after the fan stopped on the video card though). It was actually a very simple problem that I stupidly didn't check (I was assuming the worst so I didn't think of it). The problem was the DVI cable, it wasn't connected properly to the LCD! I feel soooo stupid now :o.

I ordered a X800GTO before I figured this out so now I will return it to newegg for a full refund (I just refuse to accept the package and it gets sent back to newegg).

See why I suggested switching the video cards? Then you would have realized it wasnt the problem.
