Dead Computer

Hey, I just swapped out my cpu fan and heatsink, old one sounded like a jet plane, but after I put the new one on, when I power up, my hdd and power light both come on solid and I have no screen. the only real diff with the heatsink is the old one had the plastic clips that you just pushed into place and the new one has a bracket that goes on the back of the mb to hold it into place. I get no mb error beeps i've tripple checked to make sure everything is connected proper, did i somehow destroy my mb?

One thing to check for, make sure you aren't shorting out on your motherboard. Make sure that it is correctly installed on the standoffs and that no part of the motherboard is touching the case. Other then that triple check that your graphics card is installed correctly.

It sounds like you bent some pins on your CPU or something. That or you have an Athlon XP CPU and chipped the die. It's easy enough to do.

Ya take your cpu out, and check the pins if any of them are bent, try and bend them back very very very very carefully, as not to break one off.

I pulled the cpu, it looked fine, so i put it back and powered up, hdd and power lights came on solid again, but I got vid and then it froze during the mem test.

You may have zapped your memory then. Hmm stupid static electricity. You have any spare memory you can try out? Or if you have multiple sticks try various combinations of them and see if you can get the to boot.

I pulled off the nice new quiet fan, put the jet engine the really doesn't cool at all back on and it just took off. could it just be the bracket on the back of the mb?
