Dead dvd burner?

A few days ago someone asked me to take a look at their desktop computer. They said that they kept getting errors with their dvd burning software, Elby CloneDvd. It was the original version, so I figured an update might help. The update got past all of the errors they previously had and completed the burn process. When I took the dvd out, I found that nothing was written to it, so I tried another dvd program. It also went through the burn process and said the dvd was done, but it was the same thing, a blank dvd. The drive is made for burning cdrs and dvdrs. It reads dvds and cds, and it burns cds but not dvds (anymore). Are there separate heads inside of it? One for writing to cds and one for writing to dvds? Could it be a bad drive?

Yeah, it could be that the laser for burning the DVD's has died, whereas the laser for reading the DVD's (they are different...) is still ok. Try getting a CD/DVD lens cleaning kit and see if that clears up the problem at all. If not, the drive probably can't burn DVD's anymore... :(
