Dead motherboard?

A friend of mines pc has suddenly become VERY ill
Basically he was burning some cds, and just before completion errors would occur resulting in a coaster, and an unresponsive cd drive. he then tried to restart but nothing happened, the fans and all that would spin up for a few seconds before shutting down, he cant even get to the screen where it gives bios details. he has tried removing and reinserting all of the connections, he even tried botting with out the cpu (not sure that was very smart) but it did result in a hang with fans spinning and blank screen.
He believes that cpu has had it but i think its something to do with his bios. they havent been flashed in a while, but i am not really sure what could have caused such a problem if that is in fact the case.

Thanks for any help!!

i just spoke to him now, he cant really eliminate anythin because he is unable to get to the POST screen, and i believe the PSU to be ok as it is brand new, the closeest he can get to a startup is by removing the cpu that way the fans stay on, with the cpu still inserted it powers down after a few seconds, we are pretty sure its either the cpu or motherboard  just wondered if anyone could help

thanks

Sorry to bump this, but my mate is completely without a pc right now, and hes got a ton of work to do, and just wants to know wether he needs to replace the motherboard or the cpu?

Thanks

Try clearing the CMOS (either by changing the jumpers around or removing the battery... check the manual). Is there anything appearing on the screen at all? I've had motherboard that did the same thing - powered up for a few seconds and then shut down; so my guess would be a bad motherboard though its hard to tell without swapping parts.

motherboard is about a year old its a gigabyte AMD s754

i will get him to clear the CMOS, cant believe i didn't think of trying that!

Thanks

Wont matter cuz the boot process wont get very far

Realitically ... if its at that .. yer prolly gonna need/want to replace both.

Whats the PSU in question? Have a lookk at http://www.computerforum.com/showthread.php?t=10764

Probably the cpu the system is shutting itself down because it is getting too hot. everthing is connected properly right? why dont you point a fan toward the open case and see what happens to make sure the system stays cool
:)

They dont get that hot that quickly ... you can easily get the video BIOS to bootup before any heat issues come up :)
