Hey guys,

I had norton before which was class at blocking flash adverts and ads on websites inc popups. It always seemed to block the right things and didn't need to disable it to see anything i should of been viewing. Anyways i recently changed to Nod32 which don't have ad blocking on. Now im sooo annoyed at the fact i see ads on nearly every site i go on and am wondering whats available to do the job Norton used to do??

Im using IE6 btw and wont change to another brower :\

You can try using Privoxy and Tor together, which will also hide your idenity and ip whereever you go, you will need to vonfigie it a little bit to block everything you want, but it should work well. It's a little slow at loading pages though.

thanks for the tips guys, ive installed the adsfilter thing and its really cool the way you just right click on ads and it disables them. Really cool thanks

I think it has got a lot to do with your ISP because I get NO adds at all except if you go to crummy non safe kind of “illegal” sites then you may get a 1 or 2 hits on their home page. All I have is free downloadable versions of ad-aware, kerio and avg on win XP home but I don’t think those programs stop them.

With the enable popup blocker option chosen in IE 6 along with a toolbar with an ad blocker there too they get better at finding ways to see those dinger come up even if minimized to the start bar. Some sites have floating ads where no ad filter will stop those from walking across the screen. At one time you could easily find a number of things like Stopad and other blockers. One tool found lately tests your blocker's ability to stop ads. http://www.popupcheck.com/

EDIT: I knew I would have to re-edit this!

THE BATTLE OF the banner ads has just heated up. With Internet users increasingly implementing filtering software to screen out advertisements, Web site operators will soon have a new tool to block the blockers." http://www.infoworld.com/articles/hn/xml/01/10/02/011002hnnoblock.html

If it's Flash you are trying to stop, some apps have Flash Killers. I use Spywareblaster which has that option. You can't stop everything because like malware, someone is always thinking of a new way to annoy.

I don't find many sites annoying these days. I use FF with Spybot and Spywareblaster and only get the occasional bad site. I guess for pornmeisters.....

Some people rave about Opera as a great browser(HAR!). It was removed here fast when initially trying that along with FireFox when dual OSing Linux. If you see anything with FireFox as your default browser it is rather rare in comparison to IE6. There are some addons for IE that can help however. Finding a secure toolbar with a good ad blocker is another hard to find item though. Disabling or even removing Java applets can often keep a lengthy list of spywares and adwares off. But other crap will find it's way on!
