hi all,
im about to do my first build.
ive all the components picked but am unsure about the graphics card.
i dont game but will be using the pc for hd/bluray movies amongst other things.
what i need is a reasonably price card with hdmi that carries audio as well as video.i know dvi usually carries audio but would prefer just a hdmi cable to the tv and thats it.ill be running windows 7 64 bit
i know you guys know your stuff so would appreciate some suggestions.
would this one do the trick.its only 57 euros

here's an amazon link
on the manufacturers page it says it supports 8 channel audio through hdmi

That card will do what you want. I have a question? Are you going to be listening to the audio through your monitor? If so, that doesn't make for a great HD sound experience. I would assume that you would use surround speakers and in that case you most likely won't be using the HDMI cable for audio....now if hooked to your stero system, then that is another story.

Is this a home theater pc? Will it be used much besides HD Video? Will you want to watch standard definition on a large tv/monitor?

well both.i download a lot of movies etc.
it'll be connected to a hdtv most of the time.
im doing my first build and am putting together a powerful rig,
but i dont game so just need a graphics card that will play movies well and will look good on the tv.
audio through the hdmi is essential as i wont have a monitor just yet

I would get a 4650. Anything lower won't be as good at making standard video look good on a 1080p screen and higher isnt really going to make much of a difference. I use a 4650 in a htpc on a 47" 1080p lcd and I can't tell the difference playing the same video on my laptop with a 240m gtx. Also, most video cards have hdmi and audio through it too these days, including the 4650.

I didnt see your first link before. Just so you know, there will be no difference with video playback between a 512 and 1gb (but 128 bit over 64 bit is a huge difference). You might save some cash that way. Looks like this one is fanless though which is definitely a good thing so that you don't hear a loud fan in quieter parts of movies.

As for the power question, my powercolor 4650 did not plug directly to the psu, but i'm not sure if all 4650s are that way. Maybe someone else will know...
