decided to finish my pc

about a year or two ago i was gonna build a desktop for myself
but school, work, and other things came along which eventually delayed it massively.
so i need some opinions and advice on whether i should keep my parts and build it from there or scrap them.

here are the parts i got:

i'm pretty sure my case and psu are good enough to keep, but im concerned about my motherboard mainly.
i've been looking into the intel i5 and i7, but i dont think my motherboard is compatible with it. i could be wrong though

hmm well this is my plan
if i keep my motherboard, ill probably get the intel E8400
but im concerned if it'll run properly since its been like a year or two
 
well when i first got it, i plugged in the motherboard to the case with the psu and the motherboard blew on me
so i called newegg and they replaced it. i did the same thing and everything seem to work fine.
i guess im just paranoid that it'll happen again
so im still deciding whether i should just ditch this motherboard.
