Default Gateway?

Hello all. Not all that good in knowledge with network stuff but I have an issue. I go to ipconfig/all and all that but it shows no default gateway. I have just two computers connected through a router. I get the following error when trying to connect to MSN.

"How do I fix error 81000301 or 81000306?When you try to sign in to MSN Messenger, you may receive the following error message:

We were unable to sign you in to MSN Messenger, possibly because of a problem with the service or with your Internet connection. Please make sure that you are connected to the Internet.
Try the following to help resolve the situation:

Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
Make sure you have installed the latest version of MSN Messenger.
Make sure you have installed the latest available updates for your operating system. For Microsoft® Windows® operating systems, go to the Microsoft® Windows® Update website.
If you are using a firewall, make sure that MSN Messenger is allowed full access through the firewall. For more information, see the firewall documentation.
Verify the Advanced Connection settings for MSN Messenger.
Notes
If your computer is part of a corporate network, contact your network administrator to make sure that the network allows access to the MSN Messenger service.
If you use a dial-up connection, the connection may be timing out. Try to connect again later. "

After some research I think it may be do to the default gateway? But I don't have one it says. Could someone please help me out here and let me know how I assign a default gateway or what the problem may be? It may not even be the gateway. Any advice or help at all is much appreciated so please give me a hand. Thanks :D

Welcome to computer forum.

did you asign a static ip. go to start, my comp, my network, view network conections, right click the conection, properties, then click internet protical and hit properties. everything should be obtain the following...

Try enabling DHCP server on the router and set the IP Address and DNS to automatic on your computer.

First reply. Thanks for that advice but it was all set right and it does optain automatically so nothing there?

Second reply. What exactly do you mean? It says DHCP is enabled under the TCP/IP advanced settins under IP tab. But then under that where the default gateway section is there is nothing there? It gives me an option to add one but dunno what I would type in there? So if you can help me along with what you had said or this new option about adding a gateway please give me a hand. This goes for anyone else out there to lol. Thanks a lot!

ok. need some info about your internet. first what is your setup.

1) main csu to computer
2) main csu to switch to computer
3) main csu to wireless router to computer

if you put 3 what is your router brand.

ie linksys netgear bafalo etc.
also what is your ip adress on your computer. so like 192.168.1.100.

Hey brian thanks for the help. You able to go onto AIM and I will send ya some screen shots of all my config info and what not? That would be awesome if you could. Thanks. My name is LukeEgger08. I have already added yours.

If you don't have a default gateway in your router you have to call your ISP and ask for it and then add it yourself.
This should work for you.

ok. i just talked to him on aim. i could not help. but he has the setup liike dsl to a swith to 2 computers. one works fine the other does not get a gateway. i tried to have him put in a static ip which he got from ipconfig and put dns and gateway from the working computer. however this did not work. also just said that is sais that it has limited/no conectivity

Ya it says limited or no connectivity for my local area connection. Anyone please able to give me a hand with this issue I am still having. Thanks a million.

Go to Control Panel- Network Connections
Right Click on Local Area Connection
Click on properties
Double click on TCP\IP
Change the fourth field in the IP Address.

Go to Start-->Run-->cmd-->ipconfig -all

write the exact same numbers in each field except the IP Address change the fourth number.

The default gateway ip address is usually the ip address given to the router by the broadband ISP. input that and let me know if it works.
