Defrag/Error Check Problem

I am so frustrated. I can't check my drive for error's because about 45 minutes into it, it restarts because something is reading/writing to my HDD. So it follows that I cannot defrag my HDD which desperately needs it.

If I ctrl+alt+del and get rid of as many programs as possible except for 'Explorer' and 'Startup', one of the programs I get rid of goes away, then a different one takes its place. I'll get rid of the new one, it goes away, and a new one comes up. I have c+a+d'ed over 10 times and new programs keep appearing.

What are the minimal programs needed so that I know nothing will interupt my scan disc and defrag?

Your Windows taskbar shouldn't really have anything on it (except the clock :)) Disable and exit all programs such as firewalls, anti-viruses, spyware scanners etc. & make sure that you are disconnected from the internet.

-I was connected to the Internet.
-My hard drive has like 5% free space.
-All power saving features were turned off. Including screen saver.
I'll try disconnecting the internet.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I assume you aren't running Windows XP, try downloading a free disk scanning program. I use Diskeeper for defragmenting because it does it much better and faster than WinXPs defrag. You should try them.

For a free 30-day trial of diskeeper 9.0

Here is Diskeeper Lite

It is a free version of diskeeper 9.0 but not as completely functional. It will still defragment everthing that you need and miore but it has less of the more advanced features.
