Yesterday,Ii convince one of my friends to put linux in his system. He want to have both win 98 and linux on the system. So he defraged his comp so he can dual boot. But he kept running into a problem in the defragmentation. where with every increase in a percentage, the defragementation program will restart with the following message (Drive information changed , Defragmenting restarting) . He continue defrag with this occurring every increase in the precentage. It was only until it reached 75% that it stop increasing.

The question is why is this happening? He scan for spyware and virus with two different programs (Ad-ware, Spybot?) (AVG, Norton)

Is there a program other than the windows Defragmentation that is capable of doing the same thing.

Don't do anything or move/click the mouse while its running. Thats most likely the problem. It will restart thinking that you changed something.

yup, its called diskeeper made by executive software. keep in mind if you get the lite version you can only defrag hdds up to 120 gigs. i got it with my intel board, ever since never went back to windows defragmeter.

i just realized its probably not gonna be a problem for you on your frineds computer, if hes running windows 98 chances are he dosent have that lage of a hdd, so lite should be fine :D

The Windows 98 defrag tool was buggy - there are plenty of things that could have caused that problem. Before defragmenting, do the following:

  • Turn off antivirus, firewall, and all other programs (i.e. everything in the taskbar)
  • Turn off your screensaver

These are the most common causes of that error message
