Defragmenting your hard drive?

What does it exactly mean? Will it delete the stuff I regularly use or the things I haven't touched in ages.

Sorry for asking such a dumb question I just wanna be sure before I mess up my computer?

The reason I am defragmenting is because I got a computer game and after playing for a bit I get a blue screen saying inadequate spAce and something about BIOS updating drivers.. But when I search my driver updates it says I have the latest software? Also it says something about disable shadowing an cache? Yea im not the best with computers. =\. The game I am atleast tryin to play is guild wars. I used to play wow and my computer never gave me any crap but with GW it messes up. It happened in WoW before after one of the patches but I fixed it before.

Well thanks for reading this lengthy post. Thanks in advance for any help anyone offers me.

whenever you save something onto your HDD it is scattered onto different physical locations on the drive. one file might be saved in multiple places

RAM uses integrated circuits to access information with no physical movement, whereas a HDD has to spin itself to retrieve info... what defragmenting does is cleans house, it moves parts of files closer together so that they may be accessed quicker

i get that sometimes too, mainly when im trying to write stuff onto my minidisc player (yes a minidisc player, im living in the stone age). ive had it a few times today too when i havent even touched my MD player, dunno why, my pcs just been buggering up. ive no idea what the screens for and why it comes up so it would be interesting to know what its about.

I defragment my hard drive a few times per week (a little excessive I know).

You do nothing but organize the data on your hard drive by running defrag. It makes your hard drive run better and I believe it should be done atleast once every two weeks.

Agreed defrag the thing, its always a good idea. I defrag mine once a week, it definately makes a difference.

Also you should run disk cleanup if you have not, it will get rid of useless junk that just takes up space on your computer!

Defragmenting doesnt give you more free space, you would need to run disk cleanup in order to gain some free space back.
