Deleting Files

Well, as many of you know i just got a new computer and it has windows vista premium on it. Well, when i had windows xp home i used to have a daily cleanup. I would clean out the prefetch and temp folders, go into the control panel and empty the files from norton, java and quicktime, run disk cleanup, empty internet explorer, defrag, and empty the most recent documents/used items list in the taskbar. What can i do similar to this in windows vista? All i have found is deleting java files in the control panel, clear out internet explorer and run disk cleanup/defregmenter. Anything else?

How about a freeware good for cleaning garbage as well as offline content off of hard drives? The one program that can do a good deal of that is CCleaner found at http://www.ccleaner.com/ It cleans out Firefox and Opera browser caches as well as IE's.

Another question, this one regarding the CPU meter gadget. The largest guage on this gadget runs at between 2 and 40 % most of the time with an average of 22 and the little guage is usually between 31-44 % with an average of 34. Is this good?

That depends on what you mean by "gadget"? If you are referring to the cpu graphs seen in the task manager it should look just like this when you have nothing loaded in the background like a minimized application. The initial spike seen here is normal when capturing a screen shot like....

I mean the sidebar thing. I have AIM, internet explorer, mcafee, my printer program, the sidebar, dell zupport, my graphics accelerator and my internet connection running.

You description of cpu meter gadget points at something other the new sidebar and large clock seen as one optional setting for it. The capture here will show that. But 31-44% would be quite unusual even for Vista.

Yes, the one between contacts and currency is the one i am talking about. The larger guage to the left in the cluster right now is reading 12% but jumps to 31 and then down to 02. The other guage reads 43% right now but may be as low as 34 or as high as 45. Im running 2 gigs ram, 80 gig hard drive, and a dual core processor.

When you look back at the cpu performance graph seen in the task manager you will note the initial spike seen there. That's simply from pressing the PRTSCRN key to capture the screen shot where for that split second the cpu time is called on. That's a normal item there. You will see that by simply minimizing a window. You have to go through all of the processes to see which one sees the higher percentage next to it. If you look at the graph to the bottom left in the cpu perfomance tab of the task manager and see something like this you will find that the system idle process is what is actually the one thing that is keeping busy.

This is a screen shot from the Vista task manager here.

My page files % stays around 40% and i know that if you close processes that that % will go down. I just got a laptop so what processes can i close to have that % go down?

Im idled at 775MB on page files atm.

When bringing up the task manager you would avoid any that see "SYSTEM" instead of the user account name to the right of each individual process. If you end a system process you generally have to log off Windows to see that reload when getting back tp the desktop. As you see from the screen shot above the processes is the second tab which shows both system and software processes that are currently active and what percentage if any they are running at.
