I'm doing a lot a work to an old dell dimension 4550 and I'm wondering can it run Windows 7. Its running windows XP Home edition.
Intel Pentium 4 2.8GHz Hyperthreading enabled
2gb of DDR1
nivida geforce fx 5200
CPU cooler for a dell optiplex gx270
110 gb of hard drive storage
all drivers updated

While you'd 'meet the minimum specs' it likely wouldn't be that pleasant of an experience.

A GX270 is just as old. It's still a Pentium 4.

What about upgrading the CPU from a Pentium 4 to a Pentium D with a diffrent graphics card

Won't work as you are still using a slot 478 processor and then wanting to upgrade to a slot 775 processor. Would need a different motherboard for that to work.

The system it running the os just fine Im not having any slow downs what so ever. i was even playing movies with good fames
