Hey guys, looks like i wont be able to get a new comp, but i guess i might be able to put in somemore ram and a new video card for my dell dimension 8200. I'm wanting 512MB of ram, (what kind :confused: ) and what viedo cards will fit in it.... (i know i will have to have a new PS..)
 
Run CPU-z to check out your RAM. I feel it's PC2700, but it all depends no the age of the system and such... As for the video card, easiest thing to do is simply pop it open and see if you have an open AGP slot. I have a feeling you will, or have an AGP card you could swap out.

And for the PS, I'm not exactly sure about newer ones, but I know some Dell's have propriatary PS's. I have seen converteres out, though...
 
can you tell us which breed of 8200 you have? is it the 2.4 with 400mhz fsb or the 2.8 with 533?

i tried using crucials memory finder to see what kind of memory that computer takes, and it didnt find anything, so you might have RDRAM or Rambus...so you need to find out

Google for a program called CPU-Z, run it, and go to the memory tab, that should tell you the type of ram you need, as well as the frequency, then let us know that information and we can help you from there.
 
since i have 128X2 could i just buy 2 more sticks of the exact kind, and be done with the ram?, would a GeForce 6800 or 6800GT work nicly in there?
 
I thought RD RAM normally went for more.. Hmm, I would think that would work...

That power supply is quite expensive, but you might be smart to go with it being Dell... That or look into the converters as I mentioned. I don't think they're more than $10 max

The video card looks good too...
 
Also, it's a good idea to buy the PSU from pcpower and cooling. The stock PSU in your Dell is only a 250W PSU.

1. PC P&C is awesome but mostly overkill/overpriced .... lots of "more than good enough" for significantly less
2. Dont dells use a propreitory power connect?
 
By proprietory PSU i meant the electrical connections are different rather than the physical size :)

They do. And the one available from PC Power and Cooling is the only one I've seen for a Dell. You can't even buy a higher PSU from Dell. They only sell the stock 250W unless you bought a XPS. I believe the XPS systems come with a larger PSU (460W)

PC800. And you'll have to buy two sticks since they run in dual channel mode.

i think he needs PC400 RDRAM instead of PC800, im sure theyre backward compatible, but PC400 is cheaper so why not just buy it?
