dell demention 8250 cant find server

i bought this computer at a yard sale, i had to format it. now it has windows xp professional. when i try to log on to the internet it sais server can not be found. i have dsl connection and all the other computers are not having any problem. Ive made sure the Ethernet cable is working. any ideas?
 
this computer came to me saying it could not detect primary disk drive...i reformatted it with a WELL known format disk, correct me if i am wrong! but my office is equipped with this windows XP disk and i have never had any problems....every computer i reformat gets online, but this 1 cant seem to find the server. it searches for"yahoo.com" then searches for yahoo.org...then yahoo.net...then yahoo.edu....i am leaning towards i have a network issue! as if i am telling the computer to search for dial up instead of dsl connection. any input is is good! i am still learning how computers work

Again,

Are all drivers installed properly in device manager? It depends on the pc if the xp disc you have has the correct drivers for the lan/wireless to work correctly.

And what is this WELL known format disk you are talking about?
 
JohnB35, thanx for your reply...can u explain how to pull up device manager? i know 1 driver that is not up to date with this copy...the sound driver, i have been stumbling upon device manager in the past to delete the audio out of device mgr. and letting my comp's find the drivers...point being, i am certain that all drivers are current for my xp disk, if there is another option u can think of...please share, but i will be patient and take your advice foremost, so let me know how to access device mgr. and i will check if any thing has missing drivers

Click start, click run type "devmgmt.msc" without the quotes and click ok. If everything is installed correctly it will look ok, otherwise you will see yellow question marks and unknown devices listed in there instead. What is listed under network adapters?
 
Click on that link i posted. If thats not the correct driver let me know. What else in there needs drivers?
 
You will need to use a usb flash drive to download the file and then install it on the other computer or burn the file to a cd if you don't have a flash drive.
 
i have c.ds in hand, how would i burn it 2 a c.d.? and the devices missing are ethernet controller, multi media adio controller, pci input device, 2 universal serial bus [usb} controllers, and video controller {video controller)
 
Here are the drivers you would need.

1. Audio - http://support.dell.com/support/dow...&dateid=-1&formatid=-1&source=-1&fileid=67126

2. Chipset - http://support.dell.com/support/dow...&dateid=-1&formatid=-1&source=-1&fileid=48256

Install the chipset driver first.

For me to give you the link for the video driver, I need you to right click on that device and click on properties, then click on the details tab and give me the 4 digit vendor and device ID numbers. They look like the attached image.

i dont have any flash devices, but i have blank cds!, how can we burn it to a cd? this will help me tremendously in the future if you will walk me threw these steps.
p.s.
it is missing theses devices:
1 ethernet controller
2 multimedia audio controller
3 pci input device
4 2-usb controllers
5 vga compatible controller.
in the past i have only had only needed to delete the audio because my comps have been missing the sound...

To copy the files you will be downloading to cd, If you have are using a pc that has XP, it has native cd burning capability. All you would do is right click on each file and then click on sent to cd drive and it will create a temp file of it. When doing that with each file, you would then have it burn all files to cd.
 
I believe vista has native cd burning as well. If not, there should be some software preinstalled that will burn files to cd.
 
You download the file from the link and then send the file to cd. Before we go any further, how much system memory is installed in this machine? The reason I'm asking is because it takes Rdram which is very expensive and not easily available anymore. If you have less than 512mb, I wouldn't waste my time getting this machine up and running.
 
I replaced the built-in ether-net card with one that plugs onto the mother board and it work fine for 2-3 days. Now when I power it up, it beeps in some type of code... 5 beeps then 1 then 2 then 3...(5123) maybe? then nothing happens, it doesn't turn off but the monitor never wakes up. Any suggestions?

Unless you messed up on the code there is only a 3 digit beep code, not 4. However, your model of dell should have 4 diagnostic lights on the back of the machine labeled a,b,c, and d. Turn the computer on again and tell me what color is each light. green or amber
