hey everyone, im needing to upgrade my old dell dimension desktop (see signature) from xp pro to vista home basic. the dell site doesnt offer any drivers for vista, since all those pc's shipped with xp. ive googled around, but cant find anything useful, so i figured i'd post here and see if anyone could help me out.

ive downgraded other people's computers from vista to xp, and to do so i had to track down drivers for other builds that would also work with the components of their newer one. so, i assume i will need to do something similar in my case, just in reverse. so i was wondering if anyone here has done this, and knows which drivers will work... or might work, at least?

thanks for reading.

In my opinion, I would keep that using XP and not upgrade to Vista. Its an older system. And plus you really don't have the greatest processor in the world to use vista.

+1, not so much the cpu(i have a 3ghz p4 that runs vista/7 fine) but mainly the gpu, those dim 3k's have what, intel extreme graphics 2 in them?

yeah, it has a crappy processor and integrated graphics. but that's why i want to go with vista home basic... its the only one this rig will run!! id like to get a dedicated graphics card for it some time soon... just a ~$60 one, but its not a priority right now.

i bought a laptop a month or so ago, so the desktops dont get used much any more. plus windows xp pro crashed on both of the desktops (in different ways though)... probably cause my anti-virus ran out for a month before i renewed it. so, i wanted to try vista basic on the dell, since i have a disc and stuff, but keep xp pro on the compaq.

basically, the pc has crashed on xp pro, so since i need to redo it all anyway, i figured it give vista basic a shot. if it doesnt run well, i can always take it off and put xp pro back on it. if it handles basic well, i'll get a cheap graphics card for it in the near future and upgrade it to vista home premium, more than likely.

so, any suggestions about drivers? here is the xp driver page on dell's site.

I wouldn't do it just because of its age and because of the celeron processor even though vista home basic isn't that power hungry. Still wouldn't do it though.
