i will get 3 dell dimension 5150's from my moms work next year. they have pentium 4 ht 3.06ghz, 1gb ddr2 ram, 80gb hdd,.

what upgrades can i make.

i was thinking take the ram from one, put it in another for 2gb, take hdd's from 2 to put in the 2gb ram one, get a better processor, i was thinking a 2.8ghz C2D

EDIT the cpu i was considering is the E7400

I don't think you will be able to use C2D with those. I found this on Dell's website.

"Processor Options: Intel® Pentium® 4 Processors with Hyper-Threading Technology - 600 sequence - up to 650 (3.40GHz, 800MHz FSB, 2MB Cache)."

All Dell's website shows in that it supports the Pentium 4. You'll have to send a message to Dell's tech support to find out for sure but I'm going to say it won't work. Even though the socket type may be right, I can guarantee the BIOS for your mobo won't support the processor and I am almost positive you won't be able to find a BIOS update that will provide the support you need. And lastly, DELL SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!

DELL SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've always had DELLs and been happy when I wasn't interested in looking inside and tinkering. Now that I want to - I'm learning of the limitations. :(

They've all been reliable and done as advertised at the time I purchased them though - so I guess I shouldn't complain.

Yeah I've had no problems with DELL and the limitations they have, so do all other pre-builts. We have a Dell that is almost ten years old, almost always on and not a problem yet!:D

I'll agree with them being well built machines but I despise all pre-built's for their upgrade limitations. Maybe I should have just said ALL PRE-BUILT'S SUCK!!!!!!!
