Dell Harddrive Restrictions?

I was wanting to install another harddrive into the computer at my place of employment. The computer is a Dell so I called them and spoke with a sales person about buying a harddrive off of them. I was wanting to put a 500gig hd into the computer but they told me that the largest harddrive the computer could use is a 260gig. The computer is an OptiPlex 740. I have never heard of anything like this with a newer computer. Can anyone tell me if I bought an hd from another source if it would work?

Dell Gotta be kidding.
Those optiplexe's are recent.. what the f**k are they talking about.
Am sure you can fit a standard IDE 500GB even into it's slim form factor

I'm not worried about it fitting, ducttape, a hacksaw and some woodscrews can fix any of those problems. I just wanted to make sure it would recognize that it would recognize it as a 500gig hd. Thanks for all the help by the way
